Celtic’s interest in Dutch midfielder Calvin Stengs appears to have stalled, with Leicester City now moving into pole position to sign the Feyenoord man.
Stengs had been viewed as a potential option for Brendan Rodgers as the club looked to add creativity to the right-hand side.
However, Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reports that Celtic have yet to make a formal bid for the player, despite holding initial discussions earlier in the window.
The 26-year-old now looks set to leave De Kuip, but it won’t be for Glasgow. Both Leicester City and Pisa have stepped forward and are believed to have contacted Feyenoord about a deal, with the Dutch club open to selling. A fee in the region of £5.1 million is thought to be enough to get a deal over the line.
Stengs’ future at Feyenoord has looked uncertain throughout the summer. Although he featured in pre-season, head coach Robin van Persie has reportedly told the player he’ll face an uphill battle for regular minutes. That, coupled with fitness issues from last season, has left the Dutchman seeking a new challenge.
His first campaign back in the Eredivisie had shown promise following his move from Nice in 2023, but injuries disrupted his rhythm. Now, with his place under threat, Stengs is looking for a club where he can play consistently, and Leicester may be offering just that.

From a Celtic perspective, attention appears to have shifted elsewhere. With several bids already knocked back for Jakob Breum and other areas of the squad still requiring reinforcement, the club may now be focused on more active targets.
Stengs had the technical quality and profile to suit Rodgers’ system, but unless something changes quickly, it looks like the Dutchman will be heading elsewhere before the window closes.
