Celtic’s interest in Caoimhín Kelleher seemingly came to a definitive end last summer, with Brentford reportedly agreeing a deal with Liverpool to sign the Ireland international. The fee is understood to be £12.5 million upfront, potentially rising to £18 million with add-ons. [Sky Sports]
The Hoops had tracked Kelleher for some time as a possible long-term replacement for Joe Hart, who hung up his gloves at the end of the 2023/24 season. However, the financial package required to land the 25-year-old always looked beyond Celtic’s reach, with Liverpool holding firm on a valuation close to £20 million.

That figure proved too steep for the Celtic hierarchy, who instead opted to bring in Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo last summer to compete for the number one jersey. Schmeichel, who has taken the number 1 shirt, has provided experience and stability, with the exception of the Scottish Cup final, while Sinisalo continues to develop as a promising option between the sticks.
Scott Bain, who served as a backup keeper for several seasons, has already confirmed his departure this summer. In a move that adds depth without draining resources, Celtic are now expected to re-sign Ross Doohan on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old, who came through the club’s academy, is reportedly set to return as third-choice keeper.
With the goalkeeper position largely settled for the season ahead, Celtic’s focus will likely turn to strengthening other areas of the pitch. The collapse of any serious move for Kelleher is no great surprise, but it does show the financial reality the club must navigate in a competitive market.
