Former Celtic midfielder and Scotland international Stuart Armstrong appears set to return to UK football just over four months after moving to the MLS.
Armstrong, who currently plays for Vancouver Whitecaps alongside Ryan Gauld—his former Dundee United teammate from 2009 to 2014—appears unlikely to stay in Canada long-term. Despite Gauld captaining the club and their shared history coming through the youth setup together, it seems not enough to convince Armstrong to remain.

Having spent the rest of his career in Scotland and England, Armstrong’s move across the Atlantic was always a challenge. However, he now appears set for a UK return, with RecordSport reporting that Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl is eager to reunite with him, having previously worked together at Southampton when Röhl was assistant manager.
Wednesday currently sit 10th in the EFL Championship, just three points off sixth-placed Middlesbrough. Armstrong’s current deal at Whitecaps runs until December 2026, but the MLS side are likely to make a profit if he moves, having signed him on a free transfer in September after his release from Southampton following their promotion to the Premier League.
A move to a competitive Championship side certainly appears like a positive for the former Celtic midfielder, who has yet to retire from international football at 32 years old. Reuniting with Röhl could strengthen his chances of continuing to make Scotland squads under Steve Clarke.
