Report: Como Target Celtic Treble Hero

Former Celtic defender Carl Starfelt could be on the move again, with Serie A outfit Como reportedly pushing to bring the Swede back to top-flight Italian football.

Como are looking to bolster their defence and have opened talks over a possible deal for the Celta Vigo centre-back.

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedullà reported over the weekend that Como, managed by Cesc Fàbregas, are exploring a double swoop at the back, with Starfelt and AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw both on their radar.

Starfelt, who still has two years to run on his contract with the La Liga side, is said to be the subject of “advanced negotiations” as Como look to strike quickly in the transfer window.

The 30-year-old Swede remains an important part of Celta’s plans, having arrived from Celtic in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth around €5 million. Despite the Spanish side’s mixed fortunes since his arrival, Starfelt has featured regularly and retains the trust of the coaching staff.

Fàbregas, who has already shown an eye for ex-Celtic connections by bringing in Alex Valle on loan in January, is understood to be a fan of Starfelt’s qualities and sees him as a player capable of shoring up Como’s backline as they target survival, and possibly more, in their second season back in Serie A.

During his time at Celtic, Starfelt divided opinion among the support. He was consistently solid in the tackle and quick to recover when exposed, but critics often pointed to his uneasy distribution under pressure.

Still, he could prove valuable for a side like Como, seeking experience and defensive stability without gambling on untested potential.

Whether Celta decide to cash in remains to be seen, but Starfelt’s name is clearly one that won’t go away as Como step up their recruitment drive ahead of the new campaign.
