Report: Celtic Rebuild Begins as Fringe Stars Face Axe

Brendan Rodgers is reportedly preparing for a summer shake-up at Celtic, with several fringe players potentially heading for the exit. With Champions League qualifiers returning and domestic dominance to maintain, the Celtic boss is expected to streamline his squad to make room for new additions.

According to Sky Sports, Rodgers is open to moving on four players from the Hoops. Gustaf Lagerbielke, Luis Palma, Maik Nawrocki and Marco Tilio have all struggled to make a consistent impact and could now be deemed surplus to requirements. The same applies to Stephen Welsh, who also spent the season out on loan.

Lagerbielke, who joined Celtic in 2023, has failed to nail down a regular place and spent the 2024/25 campaign at FC Twente. Despite some promise in the Eredivisie, Rodgers reportedly sees no long-term future for the Swedish defender in Glasgow. Similarly, Nawrocki has struggled with fitness and form since arriving from Legia Warsaw and has not established himself in the first team conistently.

Luis Palma made flashes of impact early in his Celtic career but faded out of the picture and is another name now being linked with a permanent exit. Meanwhile, Marco Tilio and Stephen Welsh were both loaned out for the season — to Melbourne City and KV Mechelen respectively — and are not thought to be part of Rodgers’ plans going forward.

Rodgers is believed to be focused on refining a tighter, more competitive squad capable of handling both domestic expectations and European challenges. Moving on fringe players would also create space for potential signings, particularly in key areas like central defence and the wide attacking roles.

With the summer transfer window set to open, these decisions could mark the beginning of a significant rebuild as Rodgers shapes the squad in his image for the campaign ahead.
