Report: Celtic Favourite in Running for Dundee Job

Former Celtic star Shaun Maloney is being linked with the Dundee manager’s job after the club parted ways with Tony Docherty. The decision was made by club owner Tim Keyes and managing director John Nelms, with Docherty’s backroom staff also leaving the club.

The Scottish Sun reports that former Celtic winger Shaun Maloney, who is currently out of work, was sacked by Wigan Athletic in March. He lost his job following a 2–1 home defeat to Reading, which left Wigan sitting 15th in League One, just six points clear of the relegation zone.

This isn’t the first time Maloney has been in the running for the Dundee job. Back in 2022, the club spoke with him about becoming manager, but they couldn’t come to an agreement.

Maloney started his coaching career with Celtic’s under-20s in 2017. A year later, he joined Belgium’s national team staff, working alongside Roberto Martinez. He helped coach top players and was part of the setup during Euro 2020, where Belgium reached the quarter-finals before losing to Italy.

In December 2021, Maloney was appointed manager of Hibernian. He won his first two games, but results quickly turned. Hibs went on a run of one win in 13 league matches and dropped into the bottom half of the table. After a Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Hearts, he was sacked in April 2022.

He returned to Wigan, one of his former clubs as a player, in January 2023. His time there didn’t go to plan either, and he left in March 2025 after a poor run of form.

Despite these setbacks, Dundee are once again looking at Maloney. He knows the Scottish game well and has experience at both club and international level. Dundee could be the right place for him to get back on track.

Maloney was known as a clever and hard-working player at Celtic. Now, he’s looking to prove himself as a manager. If he takes the Dundee job, it would be his third role in charge of a senior team.

The club needs a new direction, and Maloney may be the man to lead it. Talks haven’t started yet, but fans will be watching closely to see if he returns to Scottish football once again.
