Celtic are reportedly close to landing their second Japanese signing of the summer, with Shin Yamada reportedly set to join the club once the E-1 Championship wraps up next week.
According to Japanese outlet Sports Hochi, the 25-year-old striker is expected to make the move to Glasgow following the international tournament. Yamada currently plays for Kawasaki Frontale, the same club where Reo Hatate made his name.

Although he’s only scored twice so far this season, that doesn’t reflect the full picture. Last year, Yamada was one of the top performers in the J League, finishing with 19 goals, the third highest total in the division. That form earned him his first cap for Japan, coming off the bench in a 6-1 win over Hong Kong earlier this month.
Brendan Rodgers is said to view Yamada as a possible replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi, who left Celtic for Rennes in January before moving on to Birmingham City. Replacing Kyogo won’t be easy, but Yamada’s game shares some familiar traits.
He’s not a physically dominant striker, but his movement, pace and sharp decision-making in the final third make him dangerous. Like Kyogo, Yamada looks to exploit space, time his runs well, and get on the end of chances in the box.

Some supporters may have doubts over his goal tally this year, but his output last season shows he knows where the net is. Celtic’s track record with Japanese signings has been strong, and if this move goes through, Yamada will be looking to follow in the footsteps of those who’ve made an impact at the Hoops.
With Sports Hochi reporting the deal is close, it looks like Celtic could soon have another J-League talent in the door.
