Report: Ange Postecoglou Mulling Over Celtic Transfer Raid

Ange Postecoglou, now at the helm of Tottenham Hotspur, is reportedly casting an eye back towards Glasgow, with the promising young talent Daniel Kelly firmly on his radar.

The Australian gaffer, who traded Celtic for Spurs last summer, is said to be closely monitoring Kelly’s progress, with potential plans to bring the midfielder to North London.

Kelly, who was handed his first-team debut by Brendan Rodgers this season has since made a name for himself within the Celtic ranks. Despite not featuring under Postecoglou during his tenure at Celtic, Kelly’s potential was no secret, with rave reviews from his performances in the youth setup reaching the manager’s ears.

Now, with Kelly in discussions over a new deal at Celtic, the Daily Record reports that Postecoglou could be looking to reunite with the teenager at Tottenham. However, this pursuit won’t be a walk in the park, as Premier League giants Manchester United have also expressed interest.

From July, Kelly is free to negotiate with other clubs as he enters the final six months of his deal. Celtic are keen to keep their homegrown talent, offering improved terms to fend off suitors. However, the lure of higher wages and the allure of Premier League football might be tough to resist. Reports suggest that Tottenham could tempt Kelly with a lucrative £9,000-a-week deal, a figure Celtic would struggle to match.

Should Kelly opt for pastures new, Celtic would only be due a small training fee for the midfielder, pocketing a compensation fee of around £490,000. Rodgers has shown significant faith in the youngster this season, granting him five more appearances following his debut, highlighting the club’s belief in his potential.

The narrative at Celtic over the past five years is that they simply can’t compete with the big leagues when it comes to their academy talent. The bhoys have had their pockets picked on several occasions whether it be Bayern Munich, Liverpool or Man City.

Celtic need to create a clear USP where they are seen to be giving youth a chance if they’re good enough. The problem is, the ones good enough don’t hang around long enough to make that impact. Clubs are constantly looking to find the next big star way before they become any sort of household name. Man City want to buy a player for pennies now rather than £50m five years down the line.

There’s no guarantee Kelly stays, but we really hope Brendan Rodgers and the board can get a deal done.
