Reo Hatate is setting himself up for a massive season at Celtic, and he knows time isn’t on his side.
The Japanese midfielder has long been one of the most technically gifted players in the squad, but in the upcoming season he’s driven by more than just domestic silverware.

The 27-year-old is eyeing a spot at the 2026 World Cup in North America, fully aware that the tournament could represent his final shot at appearing on the biggest stage in world football. While he’s been a regular in Japan squads in recent times, Hatate knows nothing is guaranteed when it comes to selection.
That’s why he’s treating the coming campaign at Celtic like a personal mission. The midfielder, who endured injury setbacks towards the end of last season, is fit and focused, and determined not to let the opportunity slip through his fingers.
Hatate is a man on a mission, fuelled by the hunger to win more trophies in green and white while booking his seat on the plane to North America. And he’s not hiding the fact that the stakes have never felt higher.
He said: (RecordSport), “It’s going to be very important what you build up on a daily or weekly basis. “I am going to work hard in every single training session and game because that is what it will take to get there.
“It is a big dream of mine. Of course it is. The World Cup is very important.
“It’s difficult to say what it would mean to me to be part of it with Japan.
“But this could be my last chance. I will be 29-years old next year, so the next time I will be almost 33.
“I don’t know how I will be at that point. But I do know I will do everything I can to get there.
“My mindset will be that this is my last chance so I will give everything.”
Hatate’s comments show he’s thinking about more than just success with Celtic this season. He’s focused on making a real impact for both club and country, and Brendan Rodgers will be glad to have that kind of drive in his squad as the new season gets closer.
If he can stay fit and sharp, there’s a strong chance Hatate will again be a major part of Celtic’s midfield. His knack for running games, picking passes and stepping up in big moments will be crucial as the Hoops look to keep their grip on the Premiership and push on in Europe.

With the World Cup now just a year away, every performance will count. Hatate knows his place isn’t guaranteed, and that pressure might be just what he needs to raise his game.
Celtic fans will be backing him to hit top form, because if Hatate is flying, the team’s chances of lifting more silverware will only grow.
