Red Card Ready; Unbelievable Gers Stat Means Celtic Must Prepare

The Glasgow Derby is almost upon us, there are no stakes in this game other than bragging rights, but that should be enough for the Celtic players to go all out and get the win.

John Kennedy must learn lessons from Neil Lennon and also remember Brendan Rodgers ‘plan for everything’ approach to a derby game.

Celtic famously went down to ten men at Ibrox with the game poised finely at 2-2. Instead of crumbling, Rodgers had planned ahead and trained for the eventuality a Celtic player would be sent off. It paid massive dividends when he brought on a very young Odsonne Edouard who swaggered into the Rangers box and unleashed a curling shot into the net, it was fantastic.

Compare and contrast Neil Lennon and John Kennedy standing in the dugout at Ibrox in January. Celtic were in control for the most part but a red card for a sleeping Nir Bitton changed the complexion of the game. There was no plan for this, no eventualities and both Neil, John and Gavin Strachan could be seen conferring about how to approach the final half an hour of the game. We would be behind shortly after and that was that.

Given the incredible stat, our Glasgow rivals haven’t had one man sent off all season in the SPFL nor conceded a penalty. To put that into perspective, the Ibrox club has had more sending offs against them in the last two European games than they have the whole SPFL season. Celtic must be aware the chances of one of their opposition players being sent off is minimal.

We have to play to a top standard and make the referee irrelevant. You can absolutely guarantee Alfredo Morelos will be allowed two or three free hits at Celtic player before anything is done about the striker.
