Rangers Fan Jailed for Attack on Celtic Physio

Rangers fan Alan Crawford has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after hitting Celtic physio Daniel Friel with a bottle during a Glasgow derby in the 21/22 season. [Daily Express]

Crawford, 33, was sitting in the corporate section of Ibrox when he targeted the Celtic dugout with the glass bottle.

Friel is now scarred for life because of the incident.

Crawford plead guilty to the charge, however, the judge was adamant that there had to be serious repercussions for his actions to deter more people in the future from committing such a mindless and thuggish act while someone is doing their job.

Sheriff Tony Kelly said: “This was an attack on a man in the course of his employment.

“The throwing of a bottle was not only an act of mindless violence but it had significant consequences for the person you injured and will stay with him for the rest of his life.

“The court must ensure that this grave conduct at events such as this is discouraged and the public protected.

“A custodial sentence is the only appropriate method to deal with you due to the gravity of the offence and the use of a bottle as a weapon.

“There were serious consequences to your actions and the victim. The court has to have regard to these circumstances at a sporting event towards a member of staff.”

David Friel was in the Celtic dugout ready to head up the tunnel when he was struck. The Celtic physio grabbed his head and realised he had been cut open by the object.

Police looked at the CCTV footage and tracked Alan Crawford down five days after the incident and found his season ticket which was the same seat the missile was thrown from.

He was subsequently arrested with the sentence being handed down this week. Crawford is also banned from attending football matches for a period of five years.
