Rangers Bottle It as Celtic Maintain 13 Point Lead

Celtic maintain their 13-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership despite a controversial 2-1 defeat at Easter Road earlier this afternoon.

With second-placed Rangers in action against St Mirren at Ibrox, Philippe Clement’s side failed to capitalise on the three points dropped by the Hoops.

Mikael Mandron put Stephen Robinson’s side in front early in the second half, they would hold on before adding a second from Toyosi Oluwaya in the 70th minute. With two chances converted, the Saints were clinical.

November 1991 marked the last time St Mirren defeated Rangers at Ibrox, with Kevin McGowne scoring in a 1-0 win. Fast forward to today, and the result at Easter Road means the top of the Scottish Premiership remains unchanged, with Celtic still holding onto their 13-point lead.

However, Celtic will be particularly angered considering the nature of the equaliser they had ruled out late in the match. A contentious VAR decision deemed the ball to be out of play, frustrating the Hoops as they felt they were denied a deserved point after a late surge in the game.

For Celtic and Brendan Rodgers, Rangers’ defeat is a let-off; however, the Hoops will be desperate to bounce back on Tuesday night against Aberdeen at Celtic Park.

Rangers, meanwhile, will travel to face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Wednesday night. Celtic have the chance to go 16 points clear for at least 24 hours, with questions lingering over who will be in charge of Rangers for the game
