Aaron Donnelly’s subdued reaction after scoring Dundee’s third goal in their thrilling 3-3 draw with Celtic has sparked widespread debate among fans and pundits.

The young centre-back’s 78th-minute header at Dens Park looked to have secured a stunning victory for the home side, only for Arne Engels’ stoppage-time penalty to deny them all three points.
The goal, however, was overshadowed by Donnelly’s muted response, with many speculating that his apparent reluctance to celebrate stemmed from being a lifelong Celtic fan from Derry.
The post-match discussion has seen a mix of humour, criticism, and empathy for the defender.
Speaking on post-match analysis on Sky Sports, former Celtic manager Neil Lennon was quick to suggest that Donnelly’s lack of celebration was rooted in his allegiances to the Glasgow club.
“Not too sure about the celebration. I’ve been in that position myself! The kid is obviously a Celtic fan, but he should show a little more.”
James McFadden, however, was far less forgiving of Donnelly’s reaction, suggesting that the defender should have celebrated the goal regardless of his personal feelings.
“If he’s genuine and didn’t know what to do, fair enough. But I don’t care if you’re a Celtic fan, you can’t apologise to the Dundee fans behind the goal.”
Kris Boyd joked about the incident by pointing out Donnelly’s reaction later in the game.
“I saw him celebrate when the equaliser went in!”
Tam McManus, former Hibs striker and now pundit, didn’t hold back in his criticism of Donnelly, taking to social media to call the non-celebration “pathetic.”
Overall, it was a disappointing night for Celtic, who have won just one of their last four away ties. That’s something that Brendan Rodger will look to sort out.
