Pundits Clash Over Hot Celtic Topic

Chris Sutton and Michael Stewart have had their disagreements over the years and they were at it it again on Sunday when discussing Celtic’s front line.

Stewart was adamant Celtic could use a guy like Leigh Griffiths this season in some of the games to get results and help push on with a heavy fixture schedule.

However, Sutton wasn’t having it at all. The Englishman claimed that Leigh could not be trusted by Celtic and they don’t have the luxury of hoping Leigh will find fitness and form in the coming weeks and months.

Ange has yet to really call on Leigh – he has been our injured and did get sent home from pre-season because of an online incident which has since been dropped.

There are some fans who believe Leigh is a sideshow Celtic could do without and there are others who are clinging to the hope he can reignite the form of five years ago.

Stewart was an advocate of bringing Leigh back into the fold but Sutton wants to see Celtic move on.

As quoted by RecordSport, the pair would not come to an agreement.

Sutton started: “They talk about him (Thomas Henry) coming in, a big physical target type, maybe to replace Edouard if he goes.”

Stewart replied: “If Edouard is to leave then you need a replacement – but there are options. We have seen Kyogo through the middle, Griffiths is still here and he is someone I think you can get games out of.”

Sutton hit back:”You’re talking about trying to win a title, trying to win trophies, you can’t chuck them in if they are not fit. There are question marks over Griffiths’ fitness.”

Stewart: “I disagree. I think there are games, particularly at home here, where you can get Leigh Griffiths in the side and he will score goals.”

Sutton: ” Celtic aren’t in a position to take anyone lightly and I think that was what Ange was trying to say more than anything.”

Stewart: “This is what you would regard as a risk, I don’t regard this as a risk, Leigh Griffiths is capable of having an impact in certain games.”

Sutton: “He hasn’t been able to make an impact for the last couple of seasons!”

Stewart: “But again the last couple of seasons there were a number of people who weren’t able to make an impact and there are a number of reasons for that. No doubt he has his issues but in certain games at home you can allow to take the load off of others and give him some game time.”

The emergence of Furuhashi has put Leigh further down the pecking order but if Celtic do manage to sell Odsonne Edouard they will also likely look to bring another striker in too. It’s hard to see where Leigh fits in at present.
