Brendan Rodgers is being urged to consider a tactical reshuffle that would see Daizen Maeda deployed through the middle, with doubts still lingering over Celtic’s attacking options early in the season.
Maeda got off the mark for the campaign with a goal in the 4-1 Premier Sports Cup win over Falkirk, but the Japanese forward has largely operated on the left flank so far, a return to his more familiar role after stepping into the No.9 position after Kyogo’s left last season. That run of games up top brought the best out of him, and now some believe a repeat could help Celtic sharpen up in attack.
Andy Halliday is among those calling for change. The Motherwell midfielder, speaking on Open Goal, believes Maeda’s qualities are ideal for leading the line, especially with limited centre-forward options currently available to Rodgers.
“That was the first time I’ve seen Yamada. Didn’t think he was great. I think Maeda needs to play through the narrative. It doesn’t change the narrative. Celtic need to go and sign two wingers. He’s just got every attribute to be a striker. He is brilliant on the left but it’s more so the fact that Celtic need a number 9 just now. For me it’s a no brainer that he plays there.”
Maeda’s relentless pressing and explosive pace were a key part of Celtic’s game last season. His spell as the main striker saw him stretch defences and link play effectively, adding another dimension to Rodgers’ attack in Kyogo’s absence.
Club Brugge’s pressing goal in Europe last night against Rangers was an example of the kind of direct, aggressive centre-forward play Celtic could benefit from, particularly with a trip to Ibrox just ten days away.
With Champions League qualifiers underway and the derby looming, Rodgers may have some big calls to make in shaping his frontline.
