Pundit Praises Dom McKay

Chris Sutton believes Dom McKay did a good job at the club while he was there and leaves Celtic in a better place than he found it when it comes to playing side of things.

The former Celtic star cites the hiring of Ange and Celtic’s summer transfer business as the reasons why Dom can leave with his head held high.

The chief executive left on Friday under a cloud in an announcement that shocked many supporters. There had been whispers about discontent over the last week or so, but we never thought it would come to a head this quickly.

Writing in his RecordSport column, Sutton believes Dom can ultimately hold his head up high ‘Working with the manager, McKay managed to facilitate the signing of 12 players during the last transfer window and just about every base was covered.

‘Certainly the key areas which desperately needed strengthening were strengthened. It’s not just the volume of signings, but the talent of them which have pleased the fans.

‘Dom did not have a long spell as Chief Executive of Celtic.

‘But he leaves the club in a better position than when he joined it.’

For the avoidance of doubt — Dom McKay hasn’t left the club due to ill health or due to a family member being unwell. Thankfully, that’s not the case.

There has been a clash of personalities behind the scenes with decision makers at the club seemingly unimpressed with McKay’s plans in the role.

The inquest has to happen — how did Celtic hire someone who wasn’t a good fit for the role? Why wasn’t Dom a good fit and why after so much uncertainty have we landed ourselves in this farcical situation.

Michael Nicholson assumes the role of acting Chief Executive and is well liked within the boardroom. He’ll be seen as a steady hand who worked under Peter Lawwell’s umbrella for a long time.
