Scottish Football pundit Davie Provan believes that Callum McGregor’s performances have been affected due to the amount of football he has played in the last few years.
Speaking on Go Radio, Provan thinks that the 28-year old midfielder has ‘played far too many games’ in recent years and deserves a rest in order to get back to his best once again.
“The one thing I would say about Callum McGregor – Callum McGregor needs a rest from football. He’s played far too many games over the last 3-4 seasons. I don’t know how he’s managed it, to be honest with you.
“Maybe that’s why his form has dipped this season for Celtic. Because it’s been non-stop. Between Scotland and Champions League qualifiers and Europa League ties, he’s played a colossal amount of games. The boy really needs a rest.”
Last season was far from McGregor’s best since coming into the side. Usually, he is known as a consistent performer but that wasn’t really seen at all under either Neil Lennon or John Kennedy.
That being said, I have no doubt that McGregor will get back to his best under a new manager.
Provan is right, that the potential future Celtic captain has played far too much football with barely any rest.
Unfortunately, that looks like it will be continuing into this summer, with McGregor headed to the Euros with Scotland and likely to be a key player for Steve Clarke’s side.
