Potential Stephen Welsh Replacement – Report

The news over the past 24 hours that Celtic are closing in on a deal for Japanese Yuki Kobayashi has excited the Celtic fans.

The 22-year-old’s move to Celtic looks to be very much on at this moment in time? But why are Celtic looking at a left sided centre-back?

Stephen McGowan has made the revelation in todays DailyMail that the Hoops could be set to sell academy bhoy Stephen Welsh in the January window and capitalise on the interest on him.

‘Sportsmail understands a left-sided centre half is a priority for January, with interest shown in Stephen Welsh in recent windows. ‘

There has been interest in Welsh over the past two transfer windows [Sky Sports]. A source close to the club telling CeltsAreHere there were solid bids for the defender back in the summer but Ange was reluctant to let Stephen go and not have cover.

It proved to be the right call. At one point both CCV and Starfelt were out injured leaving Welsh and Jenz as the centre-back pairing. Once you go past Welsh, the depth in that area isn’t so great.

Welsh is a Coatbridge bhoy who grew up a Celtic fan. It remains to be seen if he’d easily give up on playing for his dream club. However, we’ve saw so many Scottish players head out into Europe with great success. If Stephen isn’t going to get first team game time on a regular basis, tough decisions might need to be made.
