Postecoglou’s Centre Back Conundrum

Competition in defence for Celtic just now but with so many options, Postecoglou may be given a conundrum of who to play at Rugby Park.

One man who is a certainty to be playing most weeks for Celtic is American defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

He sealed a move from Tottenham Hotspur to Celtic for £6 million during the summer and is pretty much an automatic starter for the Scottish champions.

The headache then comes from who partners the USA international in defence.

One consideration which Postecoglou may take into consideration is the surface which he briefly touch on.

Carl Starfelt only returned to the Hoops bench at the weekend with this game likely coming too early for the Swede.

It was revealed yesterday that the Hoops would take part in some bounce games to try and give the fringe players much needed game time which will be vitally important to the likes of Starfelt.

That then leaves the option of two players with it being between Stephen Welsh and Moritz Jenz.

Welsh played a lot of minutes during the Hoops pre-season with it looking likely that he would continue his run at the back until Starfelt returned. He got his season off to a flyer, getting the first goal against Aberdeen in the first few minutes of the match.

The Scotland U21 captain unfortunately had to miss out on Saturday’s match due to an illness which left the door open for Moritz Jenz.

Jenz only arrived a few days short of the friendly match against Norwich City but was given some minutes under his belt with the defender having already had a pre-season with French side FC Lorient.

He’s been working hard since then and was handed his chance on Saturday.

Although he may have been slow to react to the County equaliser, for majority of the match the big defender looked calm and collected alongside Vickers.

He made amends for his earlier mistake when he leapt up like a salmon in the opposition box to fire a bullet header past Ross Laidlaw to send the Celtic fans into euphoria.

With both defenders having scored in the first two games the question for Ange is who he goes with at Rugby Park.

Many would say that the manager should stick with a winning formula and after his heroic goal at the weekend I’d imagine Jenz is likely to get the nod.

Much like Saturday’s match, this game could be a bit of a battle. Lafferty will pose a threat up top for Killie and it’s important that Celtic have someone who can match him.
