CHRIS Sutton believes that money is not a factor in Ange Postecoglou’s decision about heading down to Spurs, despite the previous manager earning seven times what the Aussie earns at Celtic just now.
In a recent column for the Daily Record, former Celtic striker and football pundit Chris Sutton shared his views on the speculation surrounding Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou and a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur. Sutton believes that if Postecoglou were to consider such a move, it would be driven by ambition rather than financial incentives.
Postecoglou will have dreamed of managing in, what is arguably, the biggest league in the world. To do so with a ‘top 6’ club is a hard thing to turn down.
Chris Sutton wrote:
“Ange Postecoglou is an ideal fit for Tottenham right now.
“And, if he fancies that job and a crack at the English Premier League if it is offered, I can’t really see what Celtic can do about it. I’ve heard people talk about offering him big new contracts. Offering huge budgets for transfer fees to make a bigger impact on the Champions League to try to ward them off.
“My own opinion looking from the outside in is that it isn’t down to money, be it for himself or for players that he could buy. This comes down purely to ambition. Whether or not there is that ambition to manage in the English Premier League. It’s not really about Celtic because if that ambition really does burn within him, Spurs would offer an incredible chance at this stage of his managerial career. Postecoglou wants to make a mark in the Champions League. But what sort of a mark can he make at Celtic as opposed to in London?”
While Sutton’s column provides an interesting perspective on the situation, it remains to be seen what decision Postecoglou will make. For now, Celtic fans will be hoping that their manager’s ambition can be fulfilled with the Hoops, leading them to further success in Scotland and in Europe.
