Police Scotland Make Updated Celtic Trongate Statement

Police Scotland have confirmed that 20 arrests have been made in connection with disorder during Saturday’s title celebrations in Glasgow’s Trongate area.

An update on Sunday from the organisation said that nine people had been arrested, three at Celtic Park and six in the city centre.

Thousands of Celtic fans flooded the city centre following the club’s final league fixture – a 1-1 draw against St Mirren at Parkhead – which marked the official lifting of the Scottish Premiership trophy. While much of the atmosphere was celebratory, a significant police presence was required as the day progressed.

An updated police statement released on Tuesday revealed the extent of the enforcement action taken:

“In relation to disorder in the Glasgow Cross and Trongate areas of Glasgow following Celtic FC winning the Scottish Premiership title on Saturday, 17 May, a total of 20 people have now been arrested.

“In addition, 17 people have been charged and four have been reported in connection with offences including being in possession of pyrotechnics or offensive weapons, assault and public order.”

Investigations are ongoing, with police continuing to examine further reports of offences arising from the large-scale gathering.

Celtic had previously issued a statement urging supporters to celebrate responsibly and avoid unlicensed public gatherings, referencing the impact such events can have on local communities and emergency services. Despite that, crowds amassed in the city centre, with visible signs of damage and disruption in the aftermath, including broken traffic lights and public property.

The club and city council have both expressed intentions to review how future celebrations can be better managed in partnership with supporters and stakeholders.
