Pat Bonner’s Celtic Warning as Rodgers Plots Hoops Evolution

Pat Bonner believes Brendan Rodgers will be the driving force in ensuring Celtic remain the dominant force in Scottish football. While there’s plenty of noise coming out of Ibrox following a major boardroom shift, Bonner insists evolution at Celtic Park, not revolution, is the key to sustained success.

With the 49ers takeover ushering in a new era for Rangers under Andrew Cavenagh, there’s been talk of momentum shifting in Glasgow. But the numbers don’t lie. Celtic have lifted 13 of the last 14 titles and currently boast a significant financial advantage over their city rivals.

The Hoops cruised to a 17-point title win last season, but Bonner warns that standing still is not an option. The former Celtic keeper says Rodgers knows better than anyone the need to refresh and strengthen the squad again this summer, and that will mean serious backing from the board.

Bonner is confident the right leadership is in place to ensure the champions aren’t caught sleeping. The job now is to evolve, adapt, and be ready for whatever challenge a rejuvenated Rangers may offer under Russell Martin.

Bonner said: (RecordSport), “The game doesn’t stop and things change very, very quickly. So you have to keep ahead of the game, and that means that you evolve your squad. So I think that will be interesting for Brendan. How would we go about playing against Rangers now? I don’t think Celtic will change too much. I think they’ll still do the same thing.

“I think they’ll evolve what they’ve done successfully. They want to be more consistent in key points, especially coming near the end of the season. That’s not easy because you’ve played so many games.

“The final piece is the important piece. We’re talking here about management rather than players. Players will go out and perform in whatever way. It’s up to the manager to really get that across to the players and change and push it on. The players will just come in and train and take every game as they want.

“That’s players for you. It’s the management, the staff, the board. You’ve got to always look ahead. Don’t rest on your laurels. Take nothing for granted. That’s why you have to keep working hard. That’s what management’s about, leadership.”

Rodgers now faces a key window, with Celtic holding the upper hand financially but needing to show ambition to stretch the gap further. Bonner’s analysis highlights the mindset that’s served the club well in recent years, hungry for more, never satisfied.

Brendan Rodgers has already spoken about refreshing the squad this summer, and with the Champions League group stage to come, the demands will only increase. Bonner’s emphasis on leadership and forward-thinking is a timely reminder of what’s required at the very top.

Rangers may look different next season, but Bonner clearly believes Rodgers and Celtic can remain a step ahead, if the evolution continues.
