Instead, the 2021 signing from Shamrock Rovers in the League of Ireland has established himself as a key figure in the squad, putting in some great performances both domestically and in Europe.

For someone who was expected to head back to Aberdeen this season, he’s doing exceptional at Celtic.

His stellar form domestically and in Europe hasn’t gone unnoticed, especially on the international scene. On the verge of his debut for the Republic of Ireland, Pat Bonner, the iconic former Celtic player, disclosed a conversation he had with Ireland’s national manager, Stephen Kenny, about the promising defender.

He said: [Extra]

“Stephen was here for the Lazio game last midweek and he texted me after the match to say that Liam is doing great.

“There’s a good chance that he might get into the team and he has shown at Celtic he can play at that level so there’s no reason he can’t play for Ireland.

“He will fit really well into a back three and that is what Stephen tends to play.”

Liam Scales has been the biggest surprise of this season, so far.

He could well be the reason that Liverpool defender and Champions League winner Nat Phillips is sent back to Liverpool in January.
