Amidst reports that Brighton are in talks with Celtic about a potential transfer, Sutton took to Twitter to express his perspective on O’Riley’s situation.
Sutton praised Brighton for their management and performance in the Premier League but suggested that O’Riley might aim for clubs playing in more prestigious competitions.
Brighton finished 11th last season and are a solid side but they currently lack the allure of European football, which could be a significant factor for a player of O’Riley’s calibre.
Sutton sees a potential stay at Celtic as more beneficial for O’Riley, at least for another season. He believes another run in the Champions League could be more advantageous for O’Riley’s development and visibility on the European stage.
Sutton took to X and posted: “With the greatest respect to Brighton who are a brilliantly run club i think Matt O’Riley should set his sights higher… I’d like to see him give it one more go in the Champions League with this current Celtic team… so unless it’s a big enough move stay one more season…”

Only time will tell if O’Riley is playing his football in Glasgow, Italy, Spain or England this season.
