O’Riley Poised for RB Leipzig Challenge

Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley has laid out what Celtic have to do to overcome RB Leipzig at Celtic Park.

The 21-year old who took on a deeper position in midfield in the absence of Callum McGregor at the weekend is ready for the challenge to come his way tonight if Ange Postecoglou selects him to fill the gap once again.

Playing as a holding midfielder in Celtic’s structure is imperative due to how quickly Postecoglou wants the ball to go from back to front.

McGregor has became an expert at playing the pivot and the real test for O’Riley in the role will most definitely come up against RB Leipzig this evening as Timo Werner and Christopher Nkunku are a bit of step up to Nicky Clark.

O’Riley revealed that he feels comfortable playing in a holding role having previously done so at Fulham and MK Dons and is ready to play wherever the manager sees him best placed.

“I enjoyed it,” said Matt O’Riley speaking to the Glasgow Times.

“I’ve done it before with both previous clubs. I feel comfortable in any midfield role, whether it be a bit deeper, as an eight or even a bit higher up. It doesn’t bother me at all.

“Obviously, I’ve played higher up a wee while now so I know that role very well. So in terms of adapting that’s something I’m going to have to do quite quickly.

“But they’re both thinking roles. I’ve just got to think in slightly different ways. I’ve got to be more defensively aware in certain aspects.

“Before, I’m probably more front foot, setting the press off. Whereas now I’m more that second support option for the press, just focusing on getting a good connection with the players all around me. I know what I need to do, which is the main thing. It’s just about doing it now.”

The Danish U21 international hasn’t hit the heights of last season as of yet but having belief will be key for him tonight.

Postecoglou has warned the players of going into survival mode once again as he wants his side to play their football in a certain way.
