Opinion – Key Celtic Contract Issue Needs Resolved

Celtic’s Greg Taylor has made a storming start to the new season.

The left-back has been key in the opening few games of the campaign, completing 90 minutes in all but one.

He played a vital role in Kyogo’s goal against Rangers on Sunday, proving alert in the press to swiftly win the ball off Vaclav Cerny and thread a sublime, line-breaking pass to the Japanese frontman who did the rest.

Taylor’s movement causes all sorts of problems for the opposition and on the ball, he is more than adept.

His strengths are coherent, and what he is good at he does impeccably. The 26-year-old does have some pitfalls, but he is more than capable domestically.

He knows Celtic inside out, is a key figure in the dressing room, and counts towards the homegrown quota for Europe. With less than a year left on his deal, though, his future is somewhat up in the air.

Taylor admitted he hadn’t heard anything about a new contract when he spoke to CeltsAreHere on trophy day in May, but manager Brendan Rodgers openly stated in pre-season that he wants to keep him at the club and that he is hopeful something can be agreed.

Despite this, there has been little to no movement on the situation. Now that we are into September and the first international break of the season, it is the ideal time to resolve the issue and hand Taylor the new deal he deserves.

The defender has been a terrific servant to Celtic over the past few years, and the club would be silly not to tie him down long-term.
