The Scottish Football Writers Association have bragged this morning it’s the first time in their history that only ONE club’s players are nominated for the SFWA player of the year award.
Let that sink in.
We have an all Ibrox affair for the nominations after they won the league at a canter. I take no issue with their players getting recognition. What I can’t quite fathom is why this is a first only this season.
Go back to the 2016/17 season when Celtic won the lot! Not an invincible Premier League season, an invincible domestic campaign that landed the club THREE major trophies.
That would have been the perfect time for a one-club nomination, and to be fair, it nearly was but not quite. For some reason, and no disrespect to the player here, Jonny Hayes was voted for by some in the media. The same media now who have refused to recognise St Johnstones place.
The Perthshire club are still on for a double yet none of their players are up for the award?
Do me a favour.
The fact an Aberdeen player made it into the nominations in the 16/17 season and a St Johnstone player doesn’t make the nominations in 2021 paints a very telling picture.

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter. It’s all just a bit sycophantic.
But when you wonder why Ronny Deila was treated like a mug for winning three trophies out of six and Steven Gerrard has won just one in nine and he’s being treated like a king within the Scottish media – wonder no more.
