Celtic legend Davie Hay has given his rather brutal but on-point verdict of perhaps one of the worst transfers Celtic have ever made as a club.
Last week so the departure of German centre back, Marvin Compper, who came into the club for around £1million from Leipzig and only ever managed 80 minutes of football against Morton.
The defender became a joke figure at the club with Brendan Rodgers refusing to play Marvin at any point. The Irishman brought the player to the club but never utilised him. Neil Lennon took over in February and again didn’t utilise the defender.
With a year still left to go on his Celtic contract, it was announced this week that Compper was heading home to play in the third tier of German football while also being a coach.
David Hay savages the flop signing in his Evening Times column.
“He left this week having played less than 90 minutes in a Scottish Cup tie at home to Morton. I think I was there. I can’t remember Compper at all. None of us can.
“His name will be an answer in Celtic pub quizzes for years to come. It just didn’t happen for him and by all accounts, it was never going to happen for him.
“As a manager there is always a risk that a signing goes really badly and this is one of them. It happens, I’m afraid.
“Years from now, this transfer will go down as one of the worst in Celtic history, albeit I don’t think the fee was so high.
“Big Marvin has now joined MSV Duisburg. In the German third division. We all eventually find our level, I suppose”
