‘Nothing to Prove’ – Luke McCowan Fires Back at Celtic Criticism

Luke McCowan has previewed Sunday’s Glasgow derby at Ibrox, with Celtic going into the game having won their 55th league title against Dundee United at Tannadice last weekend. However, Celtic have lost the last two derbies, leading to McCowan being questioned on whether Celtic have a point to prove.

McCowan is loving life at Celtic, having already won the double with the chance to secure the treble next month against Aberdeen. However, Sunday’s trip to Ibrox is an opportunity to silence those who believe Rangers have Celtic’s number in recent head-to-heads.

Celtic go into the derby 17 points clear, and McCowan feels that is a greater reflection of the Hoops’ advantage over Rangers than simple head-to-head results.

He said: (TCW), “I do not think we have a point to prove. We are the most consistent team in Scotland, and that is why we are going to win the league.

“But I think it is just more about showing to ourselves that it is not about us winning the league last week, it is about each performance that comes along with that and showing that we are champions wherever we go, regardless of it being Ibrox on Sunday or it being Hibs at home, or anybody.

“It is about being consistent throughout your season, and about showing that you are now champions, getting onto their patch and proving why you are, and putting on a performance that shows that.

“That is our goal for Sunday.”

McCowan sounds motivated by the game itself, not by emotion, and is focused on delivering a top performance—just as Celtic have done in their last three matches, scoring 15 goals and conceding just one.

Celtic couldn’t go into the game in much better form, with the Hoops hitting their stride just in time for the derby—something they can definitely build on. Brendan Rodgers finally appears to have settled on his strongest starting XI.

McCowan may not start on Sunday, but if he is given an opportunity off the bench, he will be desperate to make an impact. Having grown up a Celtic supporter, he has dreamed of games like Sunday’s against Rangers at Ibrox.
