New Stephen Welsh Exit Details Emerge

Celtic will bide their time before making a decision on Stephen Welsh’s future, after Plymouth Argyle submitted a loan bid that includes an option to buy.

As we reported this morning, the Championship side have made a formal move for the 25-year-old defender, who spent the second half of last season on loan at KV Mechelen. Mark Hendry now reports that the proposed deal includes a purchase clause, though Celtic are not rushing into any decision.

Brendan Rodgers is understood to be keen on keeping as many options open as possible at centre-back until later in the window, particularly as other transfer pieces continue to fall into place. The signing of Jahmai Simpson-Pusey from Manchester City is expected to be confirmed imminently.

Welsh has been back in training after shaking off a shoulder injury sustained during pre-season. His involvement in the squad over the coming weeks could give further indication of the club’s long-term plans, but for now, Celtic are taking a patient approach.

The former Scotland U21 captain has two years left on his Parkhead deal and has drawn interest from several clubs both at home and abroad. Any permanent departure would have to be right for all parties, but with time still on their side, Celtic are not ready to greenlight a move just yet.
