Neil Lennon’s Approach; Bartley Confirms Many Celtic Fans Fears
Livingston star Marvin Bartley as potentially hit the nail on the head when it comes to Celtic’s lack of cohesion and the drop off between Brendan Rodgers side and Neil Lennon’s men – many of who have been part of both squads.
Bartley played under Neil Lennon at Hibernian and revealed the manager really doesn’t do tactics. The Irishman belongs to an old school era and has learned under the Martin O’Neill learning tree, a management style which had its place in the game once upon a time.
The way Bartley describes Neil Lennon’s approach to games sounds like organised chaos. It’s little wonder Lennon’s teams rely on individual brilliance rather than a collective team performance.
Bartley spoke about his experience with the current Celtic boss and claimed there could be a disconnect between the old guard and new bhoys who didn’t play under Rodgers.
Asked about Neil Lennon’s job and what’s going on at Celtic, Bartley spoke to GORADIO as cited by RecordSport :
“Well, I thought there would be a change by now so I’m not sure anymore.
“As Neil Lennon said today, he’s quite confident in his job and is quite happy with the way things are going.
“You talked about coaching there and when you do Brendan Rodgers is up there with the best doing it at this moment in time so I think it was very difficult when he left to try and find somebody of the same level.
“And I think you hit the nail on the head with Neil Lennon.
“I’ve worked underneath him, fantastic motivator but not a manager who greatly believes in tactics whereas I think Brendan was quite the opposite so I think that some of problems that Celtic are facing at the moment, the players who played under Brendan and the boys who have been brought in after are maybe on two different wavelengths.

“If you’ve gone from a manager that’s all about where you should be when the ball is here. All about going to full-back positions and all these other things then you have another manager who is like ‘well, you go out there and work out the problems for yourself’ and then he motivates you to do that, I think at times it’s not as seamless as it had been before. That could be part of the problem that Celtic do have.”
The players were used to going out with a plan and a methodical approach to the game by the invincible treble manager meant everyone knew their roles and executed them to the best of their ability. Some of the early football under Brendan Rodgers was breathtaking, this did veer off when teams got wise to us and we never got to see Brendan solve that puzzle before he left.
Neil Lennon brought energy and chaos during his first season but we’ve seen a major drop off now. The manager puts that down to the lack of energy in stadiums.
If your main strength as a manager is being a motivator then it’s hard to motivate a group of players who are going out into an empty stadium.
Had Neil Lennon been more of a tactical man, we could have seen a better showing this term.
