Mulgrew Makes Bold Barkas Prediction

Charlie Mulgrew has tipped Vasilis Barkas to turn things around next season and prove his worth to Celtic.

Barkas looked uncomfortable in goals this season and never really captured the confidence of Neil Lennon and certainly hasn’t impressed John Kennedy who hasn’t used the Greek goalkeeper once in the past two months.

Celtic go into the summer and a massive rebuild is on the cards. We can’t go out and buy a whole new team so there will be under-performers from this campaign who go on to play a part next term.

Mulgrew believes Barkas could be the one of the players to bounce back.

Speaking to RecordSport, the former Celtic star cited mitigating circumstances that could have hampered the keepers first Celtic season.

“I wasn’t too concerned when they went for Barkas last summer. They’d taken their time and I knew they’d have done their homework on him.

“But it’s impossible to tell who’s going to work out and who isn’t. You don’t know what’s going to happen. Barkas might come good next season but this certainly wasn’t his year.

“It has obviously been difficult moving to a different country but I’m sure that next season he’ll come back fighting for a place.”

There are fans who think the goalkeeper should earn some sort of summer reprieve, but there are others who want a new goalkeeper in next season and believe it’s vital for the rebuild.

Given his reputation has taken a beating this season. If Celtic don’t want to use Barkas next term, a loan move might be the best thing for both parties.
