Motherwell v Celtic: Predicted Starting XI

With no Champions League football this week, the Hoops return to League Cup action with a visit to Fir Park.

Both sides have already met once this season with it being a tight encounter that finished with a 2-1 victory for Celtic with captain Callum McGregor being shown a red card.

The difference between that result and Celtic’s recent 6-1 demolition of Hibs was that the Scottish champions took their chances and punished Lee Johnson’s side.

In the previous round of the cup, Ange Postecoglou made a number of changes to his team for the trip to Dingwall but may want to keep a winning formula in place with the benefit of the five subs rule.

Postecoglou has emphasised the team taking it one game at a time but the Scottish champions will no doubt have one eye on the game at Tynecastle on Saturday.

Benjamin Siegrist started the last round in the cup and may be thrown into the mix with the former Dundee United goalkeeper more than able for this type of match.

At the back, the manager doesn’t like to change his defensive pairing too often so will likely stick with Cameron Carter-Vickers who is of course the captain currently and Moritz Jenz.

When the manager changes fullbacks he tends to change both at the same time but Anthony Ralston and Alexandro Bernabei may just keep their place.

In midfield, Postecoglou may look to rotate and possibly bring in Oliver Abildgaard or James McCarthy and leave Matt O’Riley out for this one.

He also has the option of Yosuke Ideguchi who returned to the bench for the first time at the weekend.

Aaron Mooy was excellent at the weekend and will likely start but Sead Haksabanovic may drop back into midfield.

In the forward positions, with five goals between James Forrest and Giorgos Giakoumakis they are both certainties to start the match and if Haksabanovic goes back into midfield Daizen Maeda may start the match.
