MLS Forced into Celtic Apology

MLS has issued a public apology following a mistaken post on their official website that falsely announced Celtic striker Kyogo as a new signing for Atlanta United.

The erroneous article sparked significant speculation about the Japanese forward’s future before being swiftly removed.

A spokesperson for the league told Sky Sports News:

“Major League Soccer’s website mistakenly posted an article that named the wrong player as having signed with an MLS club.

“The article was immediately removed and corrected. MLS extends its sincere apologies to the impacted parties.”

The confusion occurred during Atlanta United’s official announcement of Japanese striker Cayman Togashi. Somehow, the league’s website mistakenly published an article linking Kyogo to the MLS side instead. The error was further compounded by Kyogo’s player profile being visible on the MLS website, fueling rumours of a potential transfer.

While the existence of Kyogo’s profile raised eyebrows, it has since been clarified that such profiles are automatically generated by MLS’s sports data provider. These profiles cover players globally, not just those in the league, and do not indicate any direct connection to MLS clubs.

The timing of the incident couldn’t have been more disruptive, coinciding with ongoing transfer rumours linking Kyogo to Atlanta United. However, Sky Sports News previously reported that no official contact has been made with Celtic for the striker.

However, Atlanta is said to be eyeing a £9.5m swoop for the striker, with links continuing after the blooper from the MLS.
