Celtic’s occasional winger, Mikey Johnston, has recently voiced his excitement over Brendan Rodgers’ return to the club. This information was passed on by former Celtic star, Packie Bonner, during BBC Sportsound.
Bonner disclosed that he had a chat with Johnston in Ireland. In their conversation, Johnston expressed his optimism about Rodgers’ reappointment, saying, “I’m chuffed to bits Brendan’s back because he likes me.” This remark implies that Johnston is hopeful that Rodgers’ comeback might offer him more chances to get on the pitch.
Johnston spent last season out on loan to Vitória Guimarães where he made 31 appearances, scoring three and assisting five.
Bonner also pointed out that Rodgers’ return could serve as a glimmer of hope for other players who have been on the outskirts of the squad. He suggested that some players might view this as an opportunity to reintegrate themselves into the team, particularly those who have been out of the spotlight for some time.

Johnston’s time in the Celtic first team has been marred by a string of injuries, which have restricted his time on the field. Interestingly, it was Rodgers who first brought Johnston into the Celtic team, giving him his debut. Despite his limited time on the field, Johnston has demonstrated moments of brilliance.
However, the question lingers is whether Johnston possesses the necessary skills and tenacity to secure a regular place in this Celtic side? Only time will reveal if he can surmount his previous obstacles and fully exploit his potential under Rodgers’ guidance.
The winger will get his chance in Portugal, where Celtic will be stepping up their pre-season efforts. Then it’s onto Japan, where Mikey and other fringe players will likely get minutes before the start of the new SPFL season in August.
Do you think MJ still has a chance?
