James McFadden’s Shocking Take on Celtic Penalty Claim

Neil Lennon and James McFadden debated VAR official Alan Muir’s decision not to send referee David Dickinson to the VAR monitor to review Stephen O’Donnell’s foul on Daizen Maeda in the buildup to Celtic’s disallowed goal.

With the goal ruled out for a handball by Maeda, the Japanese winger was clearly pushed to the ground by O’Donnell in a clear stoppage of a goal-scoring opportunity.

McFadden said: (Sky Sports), “I’m not sure, I think it’s tough to see just how much contact there is from Stephen O’Donnell.

Neil Lennon would then reply, “I’m gonna say it’s a penalty.”

McFadden added, “Stephen O’Donnell is running; he doesn’t deviate from where his target is. He runs in a straight line, and Maeda comes into him.

“There is a coming together; he gets there before O’Donnell. I think if the referee awards a penalty kick, it’s not getting overturned, but I don’t think there’s enough in that to tell the referee 100% that’s a penalty kick. It’s the right decision to chalk the goal off because it’s a handball into the back of the net.

“I just don’t know if there’s enough; it’s not a Motherwell bias at all. I just don’t know. Definitely not enough to overturn it; I’m not sure.”

To which Lennon added, “I just think Maeda is running at speed. Stephen comes across him, bumps him, and he goes down. Why would he fall down? He’s clean through, he’s taken a touch, and he’s scoring.

“So he comes across him; for me, it should be given as a penalty, especially if he’s running at speed.”

McFadden looked to go around in circles to find reasons why a penalty shouldn’t have been awarded in a strange showing from the Sky Sports pundit, who is usually spot on with his points, with Lennon clearly the voice of reason in the confusing points made by McFadden.
