McCowan Not Chasing Scotland Spot But Admits He’d Be “Happy” to Get Call

Luke McCowan has admitted he would be happy to receive a Scotland call-up, but insists it’s not something he’s actively targeting this season.

The Celtic midfielder, who joined the club from Dundee in the summer, has been a regular feature under Brendan Rodgers and could be in contention for a Scotland squad place in the future, with 21 goal contributions this season.

With injuries affecting Steve Clarke’s squad—Ben Doak sidelined and Connor Barron struggling for game time—a midfield spot could open up in next week’s squad. However, many believe Motherwell captain Lennon Miller is the next in line after impressing this season.

McCowan, though, is in no rush. Speaking about the possibility of an international call-up, he said: [Celtic TV]

“Maybe not a target this season. It’s just something that’s hopefully on the horizon at one point, but as I’ve said before, it’s not something that’s jumped out at me from my career since. It’s not something I’m desperate for.

“If it comes along, it comes along. I’m at a great club, I’m playing most weeks, and I’m enjoying that. If that happens, I’m sure I’ll be happy, but it’s about focusing on Celtic just now.”

McCowan has been solid for Celtic since making the step up, and while Scotland recognition may not be a priority just yet, continued strong performances in the Hoops midfield could force Clarke to take notice.

He’s risen to the top late in his career, joining Celtic at 27, but he deserves his rise. He’s got real quality, and under Brendan Rodgers is improving by the game. The former Ayr United winger is exactly the type of squad player that the fans love to see at Celtic.
