Former Celtic player and media shill Frank McAvennie has claimed Celtic would be doing well to get £15m for Odsonne Edouard this summer.
Given the prices of some players in the Premier League and Edouard’s likely destination being the top flight in England it’s not too ludicrous to suggest a league who values Oli McBurnie at over £20m had to cough up some serious cash for our striker.
McAvennie puts Eddy’s low price down to inconsistency. Let’s talk about that. This has been the player’s worst season for Celtic, yet he still leads the scoring charts. He’s sometimes dragged Celtic over the line over the past three seasons to win silverware and when he’s not scoring he’s involved in many other passages of play.
However, Frank believes Celtic should be undercut on a deal for Eddy.
“I think Edouard is worth decent money but has he proved it in the last couple of months? No.” He told Football Insider.
“Would you be getting value for money at more than £15million right now? No.
“He is a wonderful talent but he has just not done it consistently enough.
“People can say he’s worth this and he’s worth that but a player is only worth what somebody is willing to pay for them.”
It’s a theme for Frank and many other former Celts in the media. They don’t want to talk up the kind of talent Eddy is but rather speak about this season as indicative of the player’s overall quality.
Given the publication he’s associated with here, we can’t take him seriously.
I’m going to take a wild stab in the dark and say there will be fans out there who agree with them. However, those will be the same fans in five years time bemoaning we only got £15m for Eddy when he’s hitting heights elsewhere.
Celtic should not be giving their prized assets away for discounted prices just because Frank’s not happy. If a club were to pick Eddy up for £15m, Frank believes that wouldn’t be value for money for the buying club, what utter nonsense.
