The transfer rumour mill is in full swing, and one name that has been increasingly linked with a move away from Celtic Park is our very own Matt O’Riley.
The English-born midfielder has been a brilliant signing for the Hoops since his arrival in January 2022 and is now reportedly on the radar of three Spanish clubs: Real Betis, Valencia, and Sevilla.
Since joining Celtic for a modest fee of around £1.5 million, O’Riley has made a significant impact. His 74 appearances and eight goals for the Bhoys are a testament to his consistent performances and ability to rise to the occasion. His talent and potential have not gone unnoticed, with the aforementioned La Liga outfits reportedly keeping a close eye on his progress.
In addition to the Spanish interest, Premier League side Brighton is also said to be monitoring O’Riley’s development. However, the 22-year-old seems to be relishing life under Brendan Rodgers, who recently took the reins at Parkhead. The former Leicester City and Liverpool manager’s arrival has been met with enthusiasm by O’Riley, who has spoken highly of Rodgers’ approach and openness.

Despite the swirling transfer rumours, O’Riley, who is also a Danish U21 international, has three years remaining on his contract with Celtic. However, the Daily Mail suggests that the young star could be the subject of intense transfer interest this summer.
O’Riley’s comments to Celtic TV reflect his positive outlook and commitment to the club. He said, “So far it’s been amazing. Everyone seems quite upbeat and [Rodgers] brings that in terms of how he goes about things… It’s a nice, refreshing change in a sense to have a bit more openness about the place. I’m looking forward to that.”
As we look ahead to the next season, it’s clear that O’Riley is focused on making history with Celtic. As he put it, “It was an amazing achievement… but at the same time we have another season to do it again.”
While the interest from Spain is a testament to O’Riley’s talent and potential, the Celtic faithful will undoubtedly be hoping that our rising star continues to shine at Parkhead for a little while yet.
