Luke McCowan Wants to End Seven-year Celtic Wait in Zagreb

Luke McCowan is desperate to end Celtic’s seven-year wait for an away win in the UEFA Champions League.

The Hoops haven’t tasted victory on the road in Europe’s premier club competition since a 3-0 triumph over Anderlecht in 2017 when Leigh Griffiths, Patrick Roberts, and Scott Sinclair all scored on a memorable evening during Brendan Rodgers’ first stint at the helm.

The manager will look to recapture the spirit of that famous night in Belgium as he takes his players to Zagreb to kick off what could potentially be a season-defining week.

While some players and fans already have one eye on Sunday’s colossal Premier Sports Cup final against Rangers, McCowan is cup-tied for the Hampden showdown.

His sole focus is resultantly on Zagreb and helping Celtic win away from home in the Champions League for the first time in just under a decade: “I think winning away in the Champions League is obviously massive,” he said (RecordSport).

“So we obviously look to try and do that.

“I think that’s probably one of the things the boys are looking towards is trying to get that, but, listen, we know it’s a hard thing to do.

“Since 2016, it’s been unbelievable teams playing here and playing away in the Champions League, so we just know it’s a tough thing to do. But you never know, it can maybe happen come Tuesday.”

There might be no better opportunity to win away from home in Europe’s elite club competition for Celtic than tomorrow.

Zagreb are currently amidst an injury crisis and haven’t won at home since September. They have also failed to emerge victorious from their last five matches across all competitions.

The Croatian media are billing the clash as Zagreb’s ‘game of the season’, and they will undoubtedly be up for it as they aim to turn their fortunes against the Hoops.
