Celtic claimed a massive Glasgow derby win on Saturday. Goals from Paulo Bernardo and Kyogo Furuhashi ensured the three points stayed in Glasgow’s east end.
The Hoops played some eye-catching, attacking football that was intense for the majority. Centre-half Liam Scales, who has taken to the Glasgow derby like a duck to water, was once more vastly impressive in this one.
Post-match, the Ireland internationalist claimed the way that opposition gaffer Philippe Clement set up his side suited the Hoops: “When teams come and press us and try to get tight to us I feel as if it suits us”, he said (RecordSport). “We can play through them and it suits the sort of players we have. It’s a nice difference from playing against a low block, which we do a lot in the league. The big occasions come against teams who come out and play and we feel as if we can come out and play against most teams.”
Throughout the majority of the season, The Bhoys will come up against sides who simply sit in and offer little to no attacking threat. On occasions such as Champions League nights and Glasgow derbies, however, things change.
The players clearly prefer it when teams come out against them, and it is no secret the attacking options at the disposal of Brendan Rodgers work much better against sides who at least try to play football.
This is why the Celts have had so much success against their Glasgow rivals over the past number of years and as long as they have the edge in attack in terms of quality of player, that gap will remain.
