Liam Scales Claims Celtic Are ‘Naive’ In Europe

On Tuesday evening, Celtic lost out by six goals to nil in the Champions League. Atletico Madrid were on-form as the Bhoys were swept aside.

An early red card to Daizen Maeda undoubtedly altered the flow of proceedings, and Liam Scales claims the Hoops showed a lack of experience in the situation. He said (Glasgow Times): “We are a young team and maybe a bit naïve at times. You come and play in Europe and the referees, you get nothing out of them. They are a lot stricter and tackles that you might get away with domestically, they give. With VAR, you are going to pick up red cards in the way we’ve been doing.”

In the Champions League group stage this campaign, the Scottish champions have more red cards than points. They need to be more street-smart because their supposed lack of discipline harms them.

Had Maeda stayed on the park for 90 minutes in Madrid, things could have been different. Atleti were a top team, though, and they taught an inexperienced (at least in the European game) Celtic a few lessons that they must learn from.
