Celtic’s hopes of landing Motherwell youngster Lennon Miller could be dashed as the teenage midfielder is reportedly eyeing a move abroad, with Serie A emerging as a likely destination. After a standout campaign in the Scottish Premiership, the 18-year-old has become one of the hottest properties in Scottish football.
Miller featured 39 times for the Steelmen across all competitions this season—32 of those appearances came in the league, alongside seven in domestic cups. The midfielder chipped in with four goals and eight assists, highlighting his ability to influence games from deep and in the final third.

Andy Halliday, speaking on the Open Goal podcast, cast doubt over Celtic’s chances of sealing the deal. “I think he is [good enough], but I think he is a certain to go abroad. I think he looks it. I think he looks at Lewis [Ferguson], Billy [Gilmour] and Scott McTominay. Seeing what they are doing abroad.”
Former Scotland international James McFadden agreed, suggesting that regular football will be Miller’s top priority: “His biggest thing is that he wants to play football. Go away and develop. But go somewhere where he is going to play every single week.”
Celtic currently have strength in depth in midfield, with Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Arne Engels, and Paulo Bernardo all fighting for starting spots. Luke McCowan was also added to the team last summer, adding further competition in the centre of the park.
Despite the quality available, former Rangers man Derek Ferguson believes Celtic should still be looking to add more. “Does a Lennon Miller then come into that?” he asked, pointing to the need for Brendan Rodgers to keep refreshing his squad ahead of another title challenge and European campaign.

Miller’s potential switch to Serie A would follow a growing trend among young Scottish players opting to develop their careers on the continent. Lewis Ferguson has gone from strength to strength at Bologna, captaining the side and earning widespread praise for his performances.
Meanwhile, Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay helped Napoli to a Serie A title win this season. McTominay’s impact was so significant that he scooped the Serie A MVP award, a major personal honour that highlights the growing influence of Scottish players in one of Europe’s top leagues.
The chance to play more and try something new seems very appealing.
As Celtic continue to assess their options, the club may need to act swiftly if they’re to prevent another top Scottish talent slipping through their fingers.
