Kyogo’s Rennes Nightmare Sparks Talk of Summer Exit

French journalist Justin Favre has openly questioned Kyogo Furuhashi’s move to Rennes in January, suggesting that the Japanese forward could already be considering an exit in the summer.

The move was supposed to be the next step in his career, but just a few months in, doubts are already being raised about whether it was the right decision.

Favre Highlights Kyogo’s Struggles
Writing for Jeunesfooteux, Favre pointed out Kyogo’s minimal game time and suggested that Rennes may have made a mistake in signing him. Since his £10 million transfer from Celtic, the 30-year-old forward has played just 83 minutes in Ligue 1 and has been left on the bench for four consecutive matches. Favre said:

“Against MHSC, Beye started players who were already in place during the first half of the season. What about Kyogo Furuhashi arriving this winter for 12 million euros from Celtic Glasgow? The 30-year-old Japanese striker has only played 83 minutes in Ligue 1 so far. Worse, he has been on the bench three times in the last four matches.”

A Transfer Blunder?
Favre didn’t hold back in his criticism, questioning whether Kyogo’s signing was a mistake. With Rennes currently performing well, there has been little urgency to integrate him into the team. Favre continued:

“A casting error? Not a choice by Habib Beye, who prefers to rely on Arnaud Kalimuendo at centre-forward, Furuhashi will have to be patient. In our opinion, it would not be surprising to see him pack up and leave during the next transfer window. The fact remains that some choices are enough to leave you with regrets.”

His comments reflect the growing uncertainty surrounding Kyogo’s role at the club. Signed under Jorge Sampaoli, who was sacked just days after the transfer, Kyogo has struggled to find favour under new manager Habib Beye. The former Celtic talisman has been unable to displace Kalimuendo, and Rennes’ recent upturn in form has made his path into the starting XI even more difficult.

What Next for Kyogo?
Celtic fans will be watching Kyogo’s situation closely, with some already questioning whether an unlikely return to Parkhead could be on the cards. Favre’s suggestion that Kyogo could leave in the summer only fuels speculation about his future. If his lack of game time continues, it would not be surprising to see Rennes cut their losses and move him on.

For now, Kyogo must remain patient and wait for his chance, but if things continue to go the way they have come the summer, there is an outside possibility he does return to Paradise given the special time he had in the green and white hoops.
