Kyogo vs Giakoumakis – Ange Answers Major Fan Question

Kyogo or Giakouamis? That’s the question Celtic fans are asking each other. While some have chosen one or the other, some supporters have asked why can’t Ange play both.

Fellow fans dismissed that, presuming it wasn’t Ange’s style; after all, he’s only switched away from the 4-3-3 a couple of times in his Celtic career.

However, the manager has revealed he’s not against playing a formation that has two men leading the line. He’s already used it once this season; after Ross County pulled a goal back, the Hoops found themselves chasing a winner.

Speaking on the Open Goal Podcast, Ange Postecoglou explained his use of formations.

“There’s been different variations; I’ve not always used inverted full-backs. But I’ve always liked wingers. I’ve always felt if you want to be an aggressive attacking team, you need to have wingers. That’s the most vulnerable point in any opposition. It’s the area you can isolate one-on-one if you have good one-on-one players.

“Because I use two wingers, it falls into a 4-3-3. Sometimes that’s been with two holders and one ten; now, it’s one holder and two tens. But for the most part, it’s been 4-3-3.

“It depends on the personnel [for going with two up front]. Ross County, we were 1-1, and I put Giako on with Kyogo. What you’re looking to do is disrupt the opposition and disrupt the flow of the game. People talk about ‘is he an Ange-style player?’ say you look at our wingers at the moment; they’re all different wingers. Look at our two strikers, different. Look at our midfield.

“We play a 4-3-3, but I could put different players in, and it would look totally different.

“We could go with two up front for sure, and that would disrupt the opposition, or we could play with two different types of wingers, and that changes a little bit of our play. We could start with Daizen on the right and Jota on the left, and then we’ll flip them over.

“All these kinds of things, even our centre backs all have different attributes; our full-backs are all different attributes. So when people talk about a kind of player, for me, what’s important is they understand the system we play and their intent, then they bring their own qualities into it.

“So if a team’s trying to stop us or during a game we get stuck, I’ll change wingers, and it’ll change our game, even though we’re still a 4-3-3.”

It would be interesting to see Giakouamkis and Kyogo lead the line, as Ange said they are two completely different players. However, there’s no need to change things just now and doing so would see another player sacrificed.

It’s unlikely Ange would use the system with two strikers unless it’s his last resort.
