Kyogo Sets Unwanted Record on Rennes Debut

With Jota marking his return to Celtic with a debut on his second Hoops debut, Kyogo’s debut for Rennes couldn’t have been any more different.

Kyogo, who signed for Rennes on Monday for £10 million, has had a difficult start to life at the club. With Jorge Sampaoli sacked as manager on Thursday, Habib Beye took over, and Kyogo started today’s game at home against Strasbourg in a show of faith from Beye.

However, the former Celtic striker has made history, with Opta revealing that he had the fewest touches in a game for a player who completed 60 minutes in Ligue 1, with just seven— the lowest since Mathieu Robail for Lille against Valenciennes in April 2007.

Kyogo completed 66 minutes before being replaced by Mohamed Meïté, with Rennes going on to win the game 1-0 thanks to a Ludovic Blas winner in the 89th minute, taking Rennes to 15th in the table and out of the relegation playoff zone.

For the former Celtic striker, it is a sign that his time in France won’t be straightforward, especially if Sampaoli’s sacking and joining the club while 16th in the table wasn’t already an indication of this.

Kyogo clearly joined Rennes with ambitions of making Japan’s 2026 World Cup squad and the financial boost that comes with moving to Ligue 1, considered one of Europe’s top five leagues.

However, with Celtic set to play Bayern Munich in the Champions League at Celtic Park in 10 days, he won’t be part of one of the Hoops’ biggest games in over a decade against Vincent Kompany’s side.
