KRIS COMMONS has questioned why VAR should be brought into Scottish football if controlled by ‘incompetent’ officials.
The former Celtic midfielder was also baffled by some of Bobby Madden’s decisions in Celtic’s Glasgow Derby defeat at Hampden on Sunday. Despite booking five Ibrox players, fans were left outraged by his performance. Lundtrum should have received multiple bookings, from tackles deserving of a yellow card to consistent fouling and blocking Joe Hart when he was trying to distribute the ball.
Many players of the Ibrox club got away with things, with Madden refusing to take any action. It was an awful performance. However, had VAR been in place, the refereeing display wouldn’t change as it cant intervene for bookings.
Writing in Football Scotland, Kris Commons questioned the introduction of VAR;
“A lot of people were questioning the performance of referee Bobby Madden. In all honesty, I found some of his decisions absolutely baffling.
“John Lundstram was excellent in the heart of the Rangers midfield, but the reality is that he was extremely fortunate to stay on the pitch for as long as he did.
“He could have been booked quite easily on three different occasions at the very least. But Madden was extremely lenient, to put it mildly.
“This raises another question. What good is VAR going to be in Scotland when the basic level of officiating is so obviously incompetent?”
Clubs are set to vote on the introduction of VAR on Tuesday 19th of April. Celtic will likely vote for the introduction, as will many other teams, but there is concern that teams in the bottom half of the table will vote against the equipment.
VAR is not the solution; competent officials are.
