Celtic head to Pittodrie tomorrow night for a clash against second-placed Aberdeen, with Brendan Rodgers’ side aiming to strengthen their grip on the Scottish Premiership.
Currently four points clear at the top, the Hoops are in scintillating form and will look to extend their advantage in what could be a decisive moment in the title race.
The depth and competition within Celtic’s squad have been a hallmark of their campaign, particularly in midfield. One of the most intriguing battles has emerged between Arne Engels, the £11.5m summer signing, and Paulo Bernardo, who has impressed in recent outings.
Kris Boyd, speaking on Go Ballistic, touched on the growing pressure on Engels as he explained why he thinks Bernardo could be the one to take his place in the starting lineup.
“I think the interesting one for me for Celtic going forward and Brendan Rodgers is it going to be Engels or Bernardo in that midfield.
“Because Bernardo’s put the pressure on him now and I know that he’s come in for big money but his performances have been, I thought he started well, but they’ve not been at the level recently.
“And I think when you look at Bernardo when he’s came on and started at the weekend he’s now asking the question of Brendan Rodgers.
“When am I going to get a start? And I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the one who stays in the team come Wednesday night.”
He’s forgotten the midfielder who got a goal and three assists at the weekend. Luke McCowan arguably deserves that midfield spot over Bernardo, but leaving the Portuguese Under-21 captain out seems incredibly harsh.

The competition between Engels and Bernardo is emblematic of the depth Rodgers has in midfield, with Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate also providing consistent quality. Throw in Luke McCowan after his performance at the weekend and the gaffer has a headache.
Victory at Pittodrie would give Celtic a commanding lead at the top of the table, widening the gap to seven points over Aberdeen and 15 over Rangers. The Dons dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Hearts at the weekend, presenting Celtic with an opportunity to capitalise.
