Kris Boyd Still Struggling with Celtic’s League Cup Victory

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has continued his Premier Sports Cup final meltdown, with Boyd continuing to focus on conspiracies rather than praising a resilient Celtic.

After claiming Rangers should “demand a meeting with the SFA” over the penalty incident, Boyd continued again today, three days on from the final, to focus on John Beaton’s decision to award Rangers a free kick for a foul on Václav Černý.

With Celtic emerging victorious 5-4 on penalties to secure a historic 119th trophy in the Hoops’ history, Boyd instead looked to criticise VAR and the VAR officials who were working during the game.

He said: (Sky Sports), “For me, looking at that, it was so wrong that it has a bearing on the game because you look at it, it’s 3-3, you’re going into extra time. There is no doubt it’s a penalty kick.

“People will say it’s human error in the VAR, but there are two of them, that’s humans, two of them have actually missed this decision. It’s a huge decision in the outcome of it, and people are saying you’ve got to send the referee to the VAR machine.

“You don’t need to send him; you are actually looking at that saying it’s a factual decision, it’s in the box, just point to the penalty spot. That’s all that was needed. It’s a huge error from the VAR and the VAR assistant.”

Boyd continues to cheerlead for Rangers in the media, with his aim to take away from what was a huge win for Celtic in a cup final where they weren’t at their best for much of the game but still showed the winning mentality to emerge with the Premier Sports Cup trophy.

Celtic found a way to win against the odds, with much of the team below the standards Hoops supporters have come to expect over the last 9 months in a game where it seemed they were well off it at half-time.

Standout performances from Daizen Maeda and Nicolás Kuhn, in particular, took the Hoops to penalties, where Kasper Schmeichel ultimately saved the vital 4th penalty in the shootout from Ridvan Yılmaz.

For some, like Boyd, a historic win for Celtic was simply too much to take and has led to consistent criticism of referee John Beaton and his decision to award a free kick instead of a penalty.
