Kieran Tierney Names The Celtic Coach He Remains “Very close” To

Former Celtic defender Kieran Tierney has revealed that he still keeps in frequent touch with one of the coaches who helped him come through at his boyhood club.

The left-back, who is with the Scotland squad in Germany ahead of the Euros, left Glasgow five summers ago for London.

Tierney joined Arsenal at the beginning of the 2019/20 season for 27m euros (Transfermarkt) – a then-record sale for Celtic.

Despite initially settling in well in the English capital, injury began to plague the 27-year-old and in the season gone by, he was deemed surplus to requirements and sent out on loan to Real Sociedad.

After a solid season in Spain where he registered 26 appearances in all competitions, Tierney’s future is up in the air.

Reportedly available for £10m, the champions could well be tempted into a move. The player himself, though, recently admitted he wouldn’t want to come back to his boyhood team unless he feels is 100% able to compete and contribute towards success.

Having worked under Brendan Rodgers previously, the defender understands what would be required.

He also knows several of his would-be teammates and since his initial spell in Glasgow, Tierney has remained in touch with one of his coaches.

“When I was playing centre-back, I’d always speak to John Kennedy”, he said (The Athletic).

“He was the guy I went to with questions about positioning. He’s someone I’m very close to and still keep in contact with. He’s been important in my career and he’s someone I’ll always have no matter where I am.”

Highly thought of by many current and ex-Celts, Kennedy has been key to the club’s recent period of domestic dominance.

No matter the manager, he has been a constant in the dugout and deserves enormous credit for his unseen work.
